Winter’s Here – Let’s Keep Each Other Safe on the Roads

Brrrr! Winter has well and truly arrived in Christchurch — and that means it’s time to think about how the colder months can affect our roads and our driving. At Harewood Panel and Paint, your trusted team for Christchurch crash repairs, we see more fender benders and bumps during winter than any other time of year. Often, these accidents happen in icy or wet conditions, and many could be avoided with a bit of preparation.

We’re proud to be part of the Canterbury community, so here are some friendly reminders to help keep everyone safer on the roads this winter.

1. Tyres Matter More Than You Think
Your tyres are your first line of defence on slippery roads. In the South Island, with chilly mornings and frosty windscreens, grip really matters.

  • Check the tread—at least 1.5mm is legal, but 3mm or more is even better in winter.
  • Tyre pressure drops in the cold, so have it checked regularly.
  • If your tyres are looking worn, it might be time for a new set before you find yourself in a spin.

Pop in any time—we’re happy to have a quick look for you.

2. Go Easy on Icy or Wet Roads
We see a lot of winter-related accidents in and around Christchurch. Most come down to the same things:

  • Driving too fast for the conditions
  • Not leaving enough space
  • Sudden braking or turning on icy roads

Take it easy, especially in the mornings or after rain. If you’re driving through shaded areas or on rural Canterbury roads, keep an eye out—black ice can catch anyone off guard.

3. See and Be Seen
With darker mornings and earlier sunsets, visibility is more important than ever.

  • Make sure all your lights—including brake lights and indicators—are working and clean.
  • Replace worn wiper blades to avoid streaky windscreens.
  • Top up your washer fluid with a proper winter mix.

4. Don’t Overlook Your Air Conditioning
Many people forget how important a working aircon is in winter. It helps keep your windscreen clear and the cabin warm.

We offer in-house aircon re-gassing and repairs—whether your system isn’t clearing fog properly or just isn’t blowing warm air, we can take care of it quickly and efficiently.

5. Keep a Winter Safety Kit in the Boot
If you’re heading around Christchurch or further into the South Island, a few basic items in your car can really help in a pinch:

  • Torch
  • Warm blanket or jacket
  • Water and a snack
  • Ice scraper or old loyalty card
  • Phone charger or power bank

Better safe than stranded.
